How do you get Midjourney to give you the AI generated image that you want? Midjourney can be very literal in how it interprets the prompt you write. There are just some ideas it can’t grasp at the moment. Keep your ideas clear and write your prompt so the AI won’t be confused. And recognize what it can and can’t do. This way, you don’t get frustrated.

Don’t get overly complex!

For example, if your prompt looks something like this: create an image of a factory machine with processed foods, wrapped in colorful packaging, but each item is dripping with trans fats, sugar crystals, and salt.

That’s likely not going to get you the result you want because there are too many complex concepts in that one sentence. The AI uses reference materials to create your image, and something as specific as dripping trans fats is not an idea it can generate based on what is available.

When creating your AI image prompt if you want a specific and consistent result, go with concrete ideas, not abstract or obtuse ones.

Here’s a simplified version of that prompt that will give a better result: packaged foods in a factory, oozing gelatinous liquid onto floor, colorful packaging.

The AI image generator can understand clear prompts that describe the imagery you want it to produce. So, focus on how to break down your AI image prompt idea into small visually descriptive bites. Compare the images below to see the difference between those prompts:

Prompt: create an image of a factory machine with processed foods, wrapped in colorful packaging, but each item is dripping with trans fats, sugar crystals, and salt.

I think this one is pretty cool, but likely not the result that was wanted.

This one gets more to the core idea and produces an image more in line with what the first prompt was likely trying to achieve.

Character Design:

If you want to just work on a character design, you will need to think about who the character is going to be and then the style that you want. You can get good results with a prompt as basic as: woman near train tracks, blonde hair, looking at the sky.

However, sometimes you have a specific character concept in mind. In that case, you’ll want to refine your prompt, but again, keep it simple. An example built on the previous one would be: a beautiful woman standing near train tracks, blonde hair, wearing a blue dress, sunset. See how I’m giving the AI clear directions?

What about including some cool lighting effects? If you’re a photographer or an artist, then you’re probably already familiar with how much lighting improves an image. For that matter, it can be the most important aspect of an eye catching and impactful image. So, how do you get the right lighting for your AI generated image?

Look for images that represent the mood or vision you want to produce and what kind of lighting is used in them. Most of the time I stick with natural lighting because it gives a soft diffuse appearance to what I generate. Though for more dramatic images I’ll go with cinematic, there’s also full contrast, focused, or hard light. Experiment with different ones, but don’t try a bunch at once in one prompt. The AI can’t pick the best one for you. For more specifics related to lighting effects and even how different camera types can change the appearance of your AI generated read my prompt crafting post here!

If we go back to our prompt and want to include some lighting, I would write a prompt like this: a beautiful woman standing near train tracks, blonde hair, wearing a blue dress, back lit (note I removed sunset since that’s already going to impact the lighting, so that would supersede any other lighting direction I try to give the AI).

If you want to get an even more refined lighting effect you can try adding Rembrandt lighting to your prompt, but if you do, sometimes the AI likes to be literal with that word and will give you Rembrandt inspired images. Which one of these examples is your favorite?

I’ve seen prompts include specific cameras brands to create unique lighting. However, they often are these 300 words prompts with the f-stops, and then Canon d-SLR, and about 10 different lens types like fish eye, macro, wide angle etc. Typing or copying all of that will not improve your image. The AI does not need all this jargon and you won’t get the results you want.

Certain professional cameras, such as Lieca and Hasselblad, make distinctive images that the Midjourney AI can recognize. You don’t need to mention them to get professional looking images though, just something to experiment with a prompt you’ve written. Just depends on what sort of effect you want if you are looking for photorealistic images.

If you’re not, then you don’t need to include a lighting effect in your prompt. Artistic mediums like watercolor, acrylic or oil painting don’t really need any sort of lighting put in.

So, stick to the basics, don’t throw a ton at it, and you should have a pretty simple prompt you can use consistently to generate attractive images for you.

Here are some prompts to get you started:

22 year-old female character with white hair, detailed portrait, close-up, gorgeous clarity, natural lighting, Lieca

a guy dancing in a crowd, music festival background, outside, detailed, wide angle, natural light

a beautiful woman, dark purple hair, black dress, city setting, volumetric lighting, edgy, photo realistic, glam
